Heat Pump Example

As outlined in the Seventh Carbon Budget by the Climate Change Committee, the UK government has set ambitious plans for the future of home heating, with the goal of installing heat pumps in half of UK homes by 2040. While these targets sound great for the environment, they’ve sparked a lot of debate, especially when it comes to costs and practicality.

What’s the Issue with Heat Pumps?

Heat pumps are being hailed as a greener alternative to traditional heating methods, but they’ve faced criticism from both installers and the public. One big issue is the so-called “spark gap” — the difference in cost between electricity (which heat pumps run on) and gas, which many homes still rely on for heating. With electricity prices being much higher than gas, some argue that heat pumps may not be affordable for everyone, despite the government’s efforts to support the transition.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

To help with the switch, the UK government introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which offers grants of up to £7,500 for homeowners installing heat pumps. While this financial incentive is a step in the right direction, many feel it isn’t enough to make the technology widely accessible, especially with the higher running costs associated with electricity. A recent frontpage article in PHAM News, for example, highlighted a widespread concern that the UK’s heat pump growth ambitions are currently more wishful thinking than a practical, achievable plan.

What’s the Alternative?
